Sometimes, it’s nice to get away.
Over the February long weekend, while most of us kicked back – or tried to – hundreds of future Olympians put us to shame by travelling to Fort McMurray and taking part in the 2018 Alberta Winter Games. They were playing hockey, volleyball, competing in snowboarding and skiing events…there was even an archery competition, 22 sporting events in all. These athletes brought their coaches and families with them, meaning that around 6000 people flooded the city for the event.
And Tridon was there to support it. Has been since Day One.
More than just radios
An event this large requires a large team and a considerable amount of coordination – getting athletes to venues, getting MEDALS to ceremonies, food prep, guiding spectators around town…it’s a massive undertaking. To assist with that, Tridon provided close to three hundred radios and a few SmartHubs to ensure that level of coordination could happen seamlessly. And for the most part, it did
But on top of providing these radios, they gave their time as volunteers. Greg served on the Board of the Games for his second year. Renee and her team of volunteers (Patrick, Bradford, Erika and Melissa), put in some very long days before and over the weekend to manage the fleet of radios and man the Communication Centre for the Games. Kory managed the hundreds of volunteers it took to keep the event going. Jackie Marche handled all corrections and printing of accreditation for the participants, volunteers and technical officials.
Absolutely worth it
In return for providing more than just radios, the team got something in return: a seemingly endless supply of ridiculously good food. Even some from that Jamaican restaurant, Chez Max.
But, in all seriousness, we got the opportunity to say thank you.
Most of our team comes from Fort McMurray, or Edmonton, or Athabasca. Many of our staff studied at colleges and universities in these communities to prepare for their careers at Tridon. And we do a lot of work IN these communities. Each one of us is a part of them.
Giving back was as much an obligation as it was a pleasure, and we can’t wait to do it again.
