Apple’s newest smartphones, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, have been out for a couple of weeks now (released on September 20) and it’s already garnering praise. The promise of substantial improvements to battery life and the features that come with the camera are impressive upgrades. The new line also offers other, more modest, upgrades, as well.
Here are some of the tweaks and add-ons you’ll notice with the new models.
Significant Improvements to Battery Life
Generally speaking, battery life can be a hard thing to test for because it all depends on how you use your phone. Do you do a lot of video editing or streaming? Web surfing or audio playback? Things like that all have an impact.
But if you just look at the specs, the iPhone 11 Pro has made big strides over both the XS and XS Max, adding 4 and 5 hours of battery life (respectively), and topping out at nearly 70 hours on a single charge.
When put tested under heavy use, the iPhone 11 Pro offered 18 hours of video playback, 11 hours of video-streaming and 65 hours of audio playback. The Pro Max’s battery didn’t last quite as long but only by a couple of hours. In short, both offer a robust battery with increased capacity.
On top of longer battery lives, both the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max offer fast charging (up to 50% in 30 minutes) and wireless charging. So, if you’re looking for a phone that can get you through the entire day, this might be it.
An Eye-Catching Camera
Easily the most standout feature on the iPhone is its camera. The new Night Mode for low light environments is a cut above what you could expect from previous generations, putting this line in good standing next to the cameras of competing phone brands. The 12-megapixel camera and wide-angle lens capability will help you take some amazing shots.
And, for those planning on taking professional quality photos with their camera, you’ll be happy to know about the 2x telephoto lens on the Pro and Pro Max models. And as an added sweetener, there is an ultrawide lens on both Pro models which will allow you to take some absolutely stunning panoramic shots.
Small downsides: the ultrawide lens isn’t featured on the standard iPhone 11 and neither is the telephoto lens. Also, Night Mode isn’t compatible with the ultrawide lens, so taking those dramatic sweeping shots in low light conditions could be a challenge.
Slow Motion Selfies…or Slofies
The front-facing, 12-megapixel, camera is capable of taking some beautiful group shots and selfies. On top of that, there is the option to take a slow-motion self-portrait that Apple is dubbing the ‘slofie’. It’s basically a video file, so expect the files to be larger than your typical photo.
Plenty of Colours to Choose From
The standard version of the iPhone 11 is definitely the more colorful option. Black and white are available, as per usual, but so are red, yellow, green and purple. In contrast, the Pro models are a bit more subdued, going with metallic grey, gold, green, and silver.
Given that the color of your phone is more of a perk than a feature, it’ll be up to you to decide how big a deal the color of your phone actually is. If you plan to buy a case to protect it (or inevitability) of it getting dropped on the pavement, the colour might not even be a factor.
The Charging Port Is Getting An Add-on
The Pro and Pro Max models come with an 18-watt charger and a Lightning to USB-C cable adapter. For end-users, that means ultra-fast charging. You’ll have to carry a bit of extra hardware, but it’ll get the job done.
